The Flatwoods Monster AKA the Braxton County Monster, Frametown Monster or the Phantom of Flatwoods. This is an interesting tale dating back to 1952 between Flatwoods and Frametown, WV. Believed to be extraterrestrial in nature, this entity appeared to be some sort of robotic exoskeleton, or even a spacecraft itself. Others say it might have been a reptilian humanoid.

The story goes that on September 12th, 1952, 3 young boys saw a bright object pass overhead and landed in the hills nearby around a local farm. They went to their homes and informed their mothers and from there them and a group of locals with at least one dog headed to the farm to investigate.

As they neared the site, the dog ran ahead of the group only to come back with its tail between its legs. Walking closer to the site on the hill, the group claims to have witnessed a pulsating “ball of fire” only 50 feet from them. There was also a mist that made their eyes and noses burn. Perhaps the mist was an acidic gas, sort of like Hydrogen Chloride Gas.

Someone then pointed their flashlight towards two small lights that were noticed to the left of the ball of fire revealing the Flatwoods Monster. The entity realizing it had been spotted, emitted a shrill hissing noise and hovered over the ground towards the group menacingly. It then changed direction back to the ball of fire. By then the group of people panicked and fled the area.

Later, one of the mothers contacted the sheriff and a local news reporter. The reporter conducted a number of interviews with the locals and even investigated the area of the sighting. He reported that there was a “sickening, burnt, metallic odor still prevailing.” The sheriff and his deputy also searched the area, but came back empty handed on any evidence of the encounter.

After this incident, others similar in nature were reported in the following weeks. Could this have been just a case of mass hysteria, people making things up? Or did something extraordinary really happen between these two small West Virginia towns in 1952?

Possible Explanations of the Flatwoods Monster

• UFO was a meteor

• The monster itself was simply the silhouette of a startled barn owl
