The Ahool

In the jungles of the Indonesian island of Java, the local inhabitants fear a creature known as the Ahool. This bat-like creature was first reported by Dr. Ernest Bartels in 1925.

It is said that this flying cryptid has been sighted all over Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Reports of sightings are have been made in countries and as far as Vietnam and the Phillipines, suggesting this creature could have a very large range.

With dark eyes and long claws on its forearms, the Ahool is described as being bat-like. Alternatively, some say it’s more like a flying primate as some have described its face as being monkey-like. Its namesake originates from a the cooing sound that it makes, which almost sounds like it's saying "Ahoooool"

According to legend, this flying cryptid is said to have an 18-28 foot wingspan, making it large enough to snatch up a wide array of prey, including humans. Some say people may just be confusing this creature with the flying fox, which only has a 6 foot Wingspan. This is a major size discrepancy compared with The dreaded Ahool.

Possible Explanations of the Ahool

• Unknown species of giant bat or a flying primate

• A very large owl

• Surviving population of pterosaur
